 Air conditioning sucks

I've not used A/C much during my FFH, preferring to work with the driving without air way to save on mpg. However today was sizzling hot and humid inside the Philadelphia area. I made a decision to make use of A/C going home from work.

Now, on Friday the other day I set a fresh record for the ride home from work (that's mostly uphill, about 7 miles) of 45.5 without A/C. My battery started that trip in a high state of charge, which will help because more electrical energy can be obtained to help you the interior combustion engine.

Today, with temperatures in the 95100 degree range and high humidity, I set my A/C on 76 for that drive home. The A/C is driven from the electric engine. It uses a lot of power in accordance with the FFH's "accessories" power gauge, especially while first cooling the auto. I then realized the amount impact this would dress in the trip home when i passed several milestones at low mpg figures. Typically its with relative ease that i can get 38 approximately mpg. Today, I obtained 25.4 mpg! Admittedly, I didn't drive as carefully for mpg as I sometimes do; along with the battery started at about 40% charge (and don't got above about 50% during the trip as a result of A/C power draw).

A/C really can suck mpgs out from the FFH, especially on short trips where its on max for much of the trip during the initial cooldown period.

I have noticed the same trend, though much less drastic as your first experience. Here in Southwest Oklahoma, many experts have tough to opt for out A/C. My one of many ways commute is all about 17 miles. Without AC I average about 3841 MPG, with AC the time is often similar to 3335.

A very important factor which i generally do is go on and run the AC even though the ICE heats up to normal operating temperature. It will help get the initial temperature in the vehicle down from 120 or so into a manageable 85. As soon as the engine is heated and i also could get in EV mode I turn the AC keep your distance and choose either the fan or a window cracked.

Actually, you WANT to make use of the AC.

The Fusion Hybrid's power supply is cooled from your cabin's air. There is a vent beneath the rear seat cusion which draws cabin air to chill the HV battery power mounted from the trunk.

Keep in mind that heat stress is the biggest enemy towards the HV battery's longevity. If you need that HV battery to stay in pristine condition, it needs to be kept cool. This is why on hot days, you would like to run the AC.

You should also periodically inspect the vent to ensure it isn't really blocked with debris. If your battery starts to overheat, the hybrid system will behave strangely and may also throw codes.
